It helps us to reinforce what should be a male or female through the symbolism and functionality of toys. You can call it brainwashing because it practices to perform the roles and functions expected of us by society at large. For example, girls play dolls because they are expected to be nurturers and dolls serves as a practicing kit on how to perform such role. Boys on the other hand plays trade tools such as cars, helmet etch as a conditioning tool that they ought to have a craft or a job to be a man as a expected by society. These toys have social meanings as well. For the toys of the boys, they convey   Ã¢â‚¬Å"control, strength,  efficiency, competitiveness, toughness, coolness under pressure† (Flores, nd) while for the girls, their toys also orients them about †cooperation, mutuality, equality, sharing compassion, caring,...emotional expressiveness† (Johnson cited in Flores, nd). In a way, social constr uction perpetuates gender stereotyping as it already â€Å"boxes† us into gender roles beginning from our childhood. Such, when one enters a toy store as an adult, one cannot help but be drawn to the section to the gender that we are oriented to. The imposition of society’s social construction of gender manifests when we visit a store because we are drawn to the section of the toys (male or female section) where our respective genders are oriented or accustomed to. These toys however are more than tools of fun. They are also symbolisms of what is expected of us or as our training of the roles that we have to play in society. For example, As a male, one is expected to play only with toys that reinforce his gender role or identities. Role that is expected of him by his peers (which could be very strong if he is adolescent) to be strong, virile, rough and competitive. Thus, he would be expected to play cars, guns, robots, swords or any symbols of the toy that represent an d reinforce his virile masculinity which is necessary for his role in society. Women on the other hand will manifests similar attachment to toys that her gender is oriented to. She may find it uncomfortable to be in the men’s section of toy store and instead will play with dolls that reinforce her gender role. O Father, Where Art Thou Essay The article, â€Å"O Father, Where Art Thou? † which was written by Joshua Alston and published in Newsweek last May, basically explained that the notion that most black fathers are irresponsible parents is not entirely true. According to the author, while statistics show that there is an alarming rate of black children living in homes without a father—50 percent, it doesn’t necessarily mean that all black fathers are the same. In fact, Alston wrote that there are a number of black fathers who are responsible parents and who have been supportive and caring for their children even in the most unstable and volatile situations. This, according to the author, is greatly illustrated in Tal-Nehsi Coates’ memoir, â€Å"A Beautiful Struggle,† in which he depicted how his black father, Paul, was a source of stability in security in a community where violence is rampant. Moreover, Alston claimed that the image of black fathers were significantly tainted by songs and shows such as â€Å"Papa Was A Rolling Stone† and â€Å"The Maury Show,† which both portrayed, in a way, that black men are bad fathers and, as a result, gave rise to the negative views towards them. On the other hand, the problem with most black fathers, according to the author, is that they think they equate being a successful parent to making a lot of money or being a breadwinner. Therefore, if black fathers aren’t able to substantially provide for their families, they opt to leave home instead of having their pride hurt. Consumerism can best be defined as the promotion of the consumers' interests and the theory that an increasing consumption of goods is economically desirable. Andy Warhol was amongst many other artists who were attacked for their open embrace of consumerism. He liked the idea that consumerism could unify Americans' of all different backgrounds but he believed that there was a lack of creativity and originality in advertising. Warhol began to use everyday objects as his subjects' and built on the movement that was later to be recognized as one ignited by him, known as Pop Art.After Warhol moved to New York, work came quickly for him and within a year of arriving, he received huge assignments as an advertising artist for a variety of high standing clients such as Columbia Records, Tiffany ; Co. , Vogue, and many others (The Andy Warhol Foundation. ) Whatever Andy illustrated from shampoo to perfume, there was a sense of decorative originality and it made his work eye catching. Ped 212 Week 4 Journal

In the year of 1963, I started school in the first grade. We did not have kindergarten in the little town I lived in. I in Plew, Mo about 12 miles from Carthage Mo, in my first grade we were on one side of the room and the second grade was on the other side. I cannot remember much, but we had a lot of recess time and played for longer periods of time. In 1964 we moved to Pierce City were I spent second grade through 6th grade in the elementary school. We spent a lot of free time out side. Our playground equipment consist of merry-go-arounds, slides, teeter totters, slides, swings, baseball fields, and monkey bars.I remember in 3rd 0r 4th grade my hands slipped and I fall flat on my face. I can remember trying to cover my nose with my shirt because it was all swollen and black and blue. Now, a lot of playground equipment back then is no longer part of todays, playground equipment. For example, the merry-go-arounds, teeter totters, and monkey bar have been removed because too many chil dren were getting hurt. We had balls of all kinds, jump ropes, hop scotch and even played hide-seek. I had three to four friend that stayed in my group to have fun with the activities we chose to play whether they were inside games or outside.However, if it was cold or raining our class had many fun activities that we could play as a group or as individuals. Our gym class was in the lunch room and after lunch was served the tables were folded up and lined against the walls. We had physical education every day. Today, some schools does not have physical education and the ones that do may have PE every other day or maybe half the time that should be allotted by state regulations. According to (Primary Headship, 2008), â€Å"teachers at primary schools, the requirements PE hours taught per week has risen from two to five† (p. ). I n the summer time my family and I loved the outdoors. We played hard as kids back then, we rode our bicycles, play baseball, worked in the garden and went to the lake on the weekends were we have swimming, boating, and water skiing. We always camped down at the water and we had to run or walk the hill to the bathroom after doing this 10 times a day, you could get all the exercise you needed in a day. Today, our young children spend too much time watching t. v. , video games, and their high dollar cell phones.When people cut out their physical activities they seem to eat more and this puts weight on our bodies, which leads to many health conditions. Junior High was just up the hill from the elementary school during my 7th and 8th years. We also had PE every day for the full hour and between different schools we had track meet set up. This was my favorite class, and I enjoyed everything that they throw at me. I was very competitive and enjoyed showing my peers and teachers how great I was. Also, my coach was also the boys coach. He was get me out of study hall to compete with the boys.This made the boys upset with the coach because even the boys could not beat me in my running abilities. The coach would say boys are you going to let a girl beat you. I know why Coach Brown did this to the boys team was to get them motivated and to stay focus. A couple of feet away was the High School buildings. This was grades 9th to 12th grade. Again I stayed the best in sports that I truly loved. When it came to basketball and volleyball and baseball we played these at our school during PE time, but we did not compete with other schools.However, a year after graduation our school started completing in these sports for the girls. As far as the boy’s teams they played football, basketball, and baseball in which, they play others school for trophies to add to the schools show case. Adoption is the Option ! Imagine you are walking down the stores at the mall when you approach a puppy store that has the cute little puppy playing in the news paper shreddings. Petting and taking pictures with it you never really come to ask yourself the question of where these dogs come from. As innocent as it may appear on the outside many of these puppies come from puppy mills in which they breed dogs in large amounts and live in horrible conditions. As an owner of two beautiful dogs I have the experience to be able to give you both sides of the story and why ultimately you should adopt. Adopting from an animal shelter has many benefits that only makes this experience even more exciting which include the costs, different breeds and what puppy mills are. Now when shopping for your furry friend whether it be for yourself or your child looking at all the different breeds it can be overwhelming and the prices only add that much more pressure. Coming form BestFriends.org it says â€Å"Buying a pet can easily cost $500 to $1,000 or more. Adoption costs range from $50 to $200, depending on whether the pet comes from the city shelter or a rescue group that has spent money on boarding, vets and grooming.†(Francis Battista). Just by adopting your animal you are nearly saving half the coast which means more money in your pocket and possible trips you can be taking with your new dog. In addition from personal experience when my sister and I adopted our Jack russell terrier Chester he came fully vaccinated and neutered ready to take home. Which means the only money you will be coming out of pocket for is just the adoption fee and you are on your way to becoming a dog parent.   Although the costs are low many may argue that they pay the price for the breed they want. Which to a certain extent I can agree and relate to the people since I myself have also purchased a purebred dog as well. Yet when doing further research it opened my eyes to see that buying a beautiful purebred dog can come with a few consequences along with a hefty price tag. It states here on Peninsula Humane society SPCA.org that â€Å"Simply put, mixed-breed dogs are, in general, healthier than their purebred cousins and typically require fewer visits to the veterinarian.†(Benefits of Mixed Breeds). So its great to not only see you are saving more costs as I stated in the last point but your dog will be there for all the amazing memories life has to bring to you. In addition when going to shelters you are seeing a wide range of different breed of dogs which can open your mind to certain breeds that you may have never expected to see. Which brings up the question of where do the se shelter dogs even come from and the trustworthiness of it. Shelter dogs often times are strays, rescue from abuse or the family of the dog simply could not take care of it. Although it may seem like these dogs are in bad health it is quite the opposite since they are now being cared for by the people at the adoption centers. As for purebred dogs one article from The Humane Society of the United States says this â€Å"Most pet stores do not disclose the true origins of their puppies, instead using deceptive sales pitches about USDA licensed orprofessional   breeders†(The Humane Society of the United States). Which often times means that you most likely will not know where your pup is coming from and that draws up a big concern of whereter they were breeded from trustworthy people or ones who run puppy mills. To fully understand retail dogs stores and people who sell purebred animals we have to look at what puppy mills are and how they affect the pups life.   The true definition of a puppy mill is a â€Å"commercial farming operation in which purebred dogs are raised in large numbers and often in substandard or poor   conditions (Merriam-Webster). For example think of farmers and how they have chickens bunched up in a coop and the more eggs the chickens lay the more space that is occupied. This can create great health concerns not only in the pups themselves but as well as the mothers of these puppies, it can also bring serious stress to their bodies. Puppy mills laws failing states in the newspaper article that â€Å"They talk of 12-year-old blind dogs held in cages and giving birth to puppies that they cannot properly care for, piles of manure on concrete floors inside sheds, cages pile on top of each other, each containing a bitch with puppies.†(Brian williams). The pups have no choice but to live in these conditions simply because the market for pure breed animals is very high. Even though the animals in the shelter may have had a bad past as well it is really good to know that we are not contributing to that market that supports these horrible puppy mills.   Therefore which makes adopting from a shelter just that more special you are able to save these animals and know there is one less animal who is hurting. Not only that but for those who have children it is a great learning experience for them and makes them feel better knowing they saved a dog. It even says from CA-Shelter-Me-PBS that â€Å"an estimated 6 to 8 million animals enter the nations shelters annually† (PR Newswire). However, since we do not live in a perfect world it is pretty impossible to get everyone on board yet even just a slight percent of that could help to at least decrease the rate of stray dogs that are left out on the street As humans we are all drawn to the luxuries in life but with our animals this comes at a cost to them and their health on both sides of the spectrum. We have the choice to choose whether or not we buy from puppy mills and add to their suffering or help to save a life and create a new one for the animal that may have thought a shelter w as their last stop. Single mothers often must work overtime shifts to compensate for the low salaries, thus taking time away from their children and other domestic chores. Government subsidized daycare is not yet a realized dream, and many single mothers pay large fees for this service. Psychological Damage Inflicted by the Residential School System Essay

First Nations children suffered many forms of abuse at the hands of the Canadian Government (Oh, Canada!) under the guise of residential schools. The purposes of the residential schools were to remove First Nations children from the influence of their families and cultures, and to intergrade them into the dominant culture (The Residential School System). This was done under the assumption that First Nations culture was lesser, â€Å"to kill the Indian in the child† as it was commonly said. The children were forcibly separated from their families to live in year-round schools where they were taught â€Å"white man† curriculum, with a two-month vacation time, completely separated from their Aboriginal heritage and forbidden from speaking their own languages (The Residential School System). If these rules, along with many others, were broken the punishments were severe (Oh, Canada!). A. I have a strong proposition for the California Legislature†¦and that is a strict and logical reform to the present Criminal Justice System in California. B. ‘The California Legislature is to be commended for its stance on crime. Not for their ‘get tough’ policies such as the ‘Three Strikes’ law but for their enactment of a little known section of the Penal Code entitled the ‘Community Based Punishment Act of 1994.’ (Senator Quentin Kopp, Time Magazine Feb 14, 1996) C. By passage of this act, the State of California has acknowledged the limitations of incarceration as both punishment and a deterrent to criminal behavior. D. The legislature has in fact declared that ‘California’s criminal justice system is seriously out of balance in its heavy dependence upon prison facilities and jails for punishment and its lack of appropriate punishment for nonviolent offenders and substance abusers who could be successfully treated in appropriate, less restrictive programs without any increase in danger to the public’ II. More facts, Opinions and Developmental Ideas A. In essence, this law proposes a community based system of intermediate restrictions for non-violent offenders that fall between jail time and traditional probation such as home detention with electronic monitoring, boot camps, mandatory community service and victim restitution, day reporting, and others. B. Pilot programs are to be developed as a collaborative effort between the state and counties requiring a community based plan describing the sanctions and services to be provided. C. A progress report on an actof this kind would be made by the California Board of Corrections on January 1, 1997 and annually thereafter to selected legislative committees. III. Revenge while understandable from an individual human perspective is not a proper basis for society’s response to the misbehavior of its laws. This human urge to punish should be removed from the current system and replaced with methods of restrictions that utilize the offender’s potential to benefit his victim and society at large. In other words, in a free society the end desired is the correction of behavior that utilizes the least force . This conforms to the principles of limited government, efficiency, reduced cost, and personal freedom as advocated by both liberals and conservatives alike. The basic underlying concept of this proposal is that incarceration should be reserved for those who are violent and thus dangerous to the public. Violent crimes would be defined broadly to include any act or attempt to injure the person of another except by accident. This would therefore range from murder to driving under the influence with current distinctions of misdemeanor and felony offenses remaining in place. The court sentencing procedures would also be modified to exclude incarceration for non-violent crimes with an emphasis on victim restitution and community service. The court would maybe rely on probation reports to provide the necessary offender personal history including employment, job skills (or lack of), and personal resources, e.g. bank accounts, property ownership, etc. Based on this information, the court would apply the appropriate sentence of victim restitution and community service with close monitoring by probation officials. As with all human endeavors, compliance by offenders would most likely not be 100%. The threat of incarceration would have to exist for those failing to submit to or comply with court ordered repayment and public service. Many will not agree with this due to the complexity and in many cases there can be more harm done then it could be beneficial. But for the most part there  is no reason to believe that the failure rate would be any higher under this type of system than is currently the case V. Conclusion This proposal provides a policy alternative to the current criminal justice emphasis on incarceration as punishment. It is based on the premise of effectiveness and cost efficiency with a high regard for individual liberty that is essential to a free society. It moves away from the concept of punishment and focuses on a more functional goal of victim and societal repayment. The proposal offers prevention at the front end rather than repayment at the back end of crime reduction efforts. The advantages of such a system are numerous. One of the most important assets of a revision of this kind is that of allowing for a major change in the criminal justice system with a minimum of disruption to the status quo. Rather than requiring an entire systemic change, this proposal works within the current practices of the court, police, and corrections. Indeed, very few authorized changes would have to be made. Enactment of this proposal would eliminate the need for future bond measures for prison construction. Not only would it save taxpayer money, it would be most advantageous to the remaining employees of the California Department of Corrections by allowing for the closure of outdated and unsafe facilities. In addition, unemployment could be kept to a minimum by offering qualified state correctional officers employment with local law enforcement agencies. It is time now to look beyond revenge and the emotionalism associated with current justice system practices. ‘There is only one practical method of reducing crime and the subsequent public’s fear and that is through a high level of police presence on the street.’ (Randy Meyer, M.A.) In essence, this revision allows for a return of the local neighborhood police officer who is familiar with its residents and business owners. In the final analysis, our very freedom depends on how we treat society’s criminals and misfits. Michael Jackson Psychobiography

When I first registered for this class I wasn’t really expecting anything to happen. I thought I would be bored, probably not pay any attention, and do what I had to in order to pass so that I can graduate. However, throughout the semester, I found myself enchanted by some of the creativity most of the artist created. I never appreciated art before, and a part of me feels disappointed at that thought now, because I have learned to appreciate some of the emotional depth and the expression these artists showed in their work.I found myself going to the museum whenever I have time now just to walk around and look at some of the things that are there. I hadn’t realized how much art ties into many different aspects of history and even surprisingly psychology. For the most part, this class, though I haven’t really engaged in topics, have opened my eyes to art, and really see that there is actually more than just paint on a canvas, or there is more meaning to a sculpture than meets the eyes. DAVID GARIBALDI David Garibaldi probably is not the most widely known artist of our time. He is still fairly young, but I fell in love with his art.There are many famous living artists today that I could have talked about, but Garibaldi really captured my attention. So, it would not surprise me if many people did not know who David Garibaldi is or know of is his artwork. To be honest, I did not know who he was either had he never appeared on America’s Got Talent in this 2012 past season. He has this mixture to his style of work which includes visual and performing art. There is this uniqueness to how he creates his work pieces, and I found it astonishing at how fast he can get a single art piece done and still be able to draw a person in instantly.Garibaldi Paintings Some people like things they can relate to, possibly understand just to keep them interested, and I thought that some of his art expresses that. In the first page of this paper, some of the images that are displayed are all from David Garibaldi. If you have not noticed, most of the pieces I have chosen to display on the cover page ties people in with music and dance. In my own opinion, I think Garibaldi expresses in most of his art pieces a sense of equality and unity among different people in gender and race.Though he does paint different portraits, he focuses on drawing people that tie in with music, for example, musicians. He has paintings of women enjoying and creating music, which to me, tells me that women should not be afraid to express themselves. Most women in today’s generation have trouble with self-esteem, so to me the paintings he has displaying women with the hair hiding the faces or, the image of a woman looking away gives the viewer a chance to let themselves think as if they were the image painted. If that were the case then that kind of style could encourage the viewer to step out of their shell.The image in the beginning of this paper the one that shows a group of people at a disco rink shows release from stress. The different styles, clothing, facial expressions show that people should go out, have fun and to just be yourself in public. I witnessed how created this piece on YouTube, and I just couldn’t believe how he painted this portrait. He created this piece extremely fast, and not to mention he painted the portrait in way that no one could make out at first until he flipped the canvas around to reveal the competition of his painting. The colors embellished in this painting gave off a series of emotions. The purple, blue, white, and green around Christ’s face and neckline resembled abuse .It told me the story of what he had to go through in order to fulfill God’s will in sacrificing himself for mankind. The black around the eye area, frown, and the tilt of the head of Christ shows sadness, or perhaps reciting a prayer since the black covering the area where the eyes would be give an appearance that his eyes are closed. Painted on top of Christ’s head was the crown of thorns with dashes of red to symbolize the blood, sweat and tears he shed for humanity. The image of the crown in the portrait displays a selfless act, one in which Christ had no qualms in wearing since he knew it was for the benefit of others.This portrait is a magnificent piece of art, because I honestly think that by the position Garibaldi painted Christ, the way he moved to create the piece shows such a strong passionate drive Garibaldi has in wanting to portray a deeper intimacy picture of Christ. The canvases which represent the series of colors, the use of musical influence really a dds to his exceptionality style and details with each stroke. In my own opinion, I think Garibaldi expresses in most of his art pieces a sense of equality and unity among different people in gender and race.Though he does paint different portraits, he focuses on drawing people that tie in with music, for example, musicians. He has paintings of women enjoying and creating music, which to me, tells me that women should not be afraid to express themselves. Most women in today’s generation have trouble with self-esteem, so to me the paintings he has displaying women with the hair hiding the faces or, the image of a woman looking away gives the viewer a chance to let themselves think as if they were the image painted. If that were the case then that kind of style could encourage the viewer to step out of their shell.The image in the beginning of this paper the one that shows a group of people at a disco rink shows release from stress. The different styles, clothing, facial expressions show that people should go out, have fun and to just be yourself in public. DAVID GARIBALDI David Garibaldi probably is not the most widely known artist of our time. He is still fairly young, but I fell in love with his art. There are many famous living artists today that I could have talked about, but Garibaldi really captured my attention. So, it would not surprise me if many people did not know who David Garibaldi is or know of is his artwork.To be honest, I did not know who he was either had he never appeared on America’s Got Talent in this 2012 past season. He has this mixture to his style of work which includes visual and performing art. There is this uniqueness to how he creates his work pieces, and I found it astonishing at how fast he can get a single art piece done and still be able to draw a person in instantly. Garibaldi Paintings Some people like things they can relate to, possibly understand just to keep them interested, and I thought that some of his art expresses that.In the first page of this paper, some of the images that are displayed are all from David Garibaldi. The different styles, clothing, facial expressions show that people should go out, have fun and to just be yourself in public.Portrait of Christ He created a piece called Portrait of Christ, displaying Christ in what looked like his final moments before his crucifixion. I witnessed how created this piece on YouTube, and I just couldn’t believe how he painted this portrait. He created this piece extremely fast, and not to mention he painted the portrait in way that no one could make out at first until he flipped the canvas around to reveal the competition of his painting. The colors embellished in this painting gave off a series of emotions. The purple, blue, white, and green around Christ’s face and neckline resembled abuse .It told me the story of what he had to go through in order to fulfill God’s will in sacrificing himself for mankind. The black around the eye area, frown, and the tilt of the head of Christ shows sadness, or perhaps reciting a prayer since the black covering the area where the eyes would be give an appearance that his eyes are closed. Painted on top of Christ’s head was the crown of thorns with dashes of red to symbolize the blood, sweat and tears he shed for humanity. The image of the crown in the portrait displays a selfless act, one in which Christ had no qualms in wearing since he knew it was for the benefit of others.This portrait is a magnificent piece of art, because I honestly think that by the position Garibaldi painted Christ, the way he moved to create the piece shows such a strong passionate drive Garibaldi has in wanting to portray a deeper intimacy picture of Christ. The canvases which represent the series of colors, the use of musical influence really a dds to his exceptionality style and details with each stroke. Garibaldi paints in front of his audiences enthusiastically because he wants to get across his messages on the canvases to the audience.
