O Father, Where Art Thou Essay The article, â€Å"O Father, Where Art Thou? † which was written by Joshua Alston and published in Newsweek last May, basically explained that the notion that most black fathers are irresponsible parents is not entirely true. According to the author, while statistics show that there is an alarming rate of black children living in homes without a father—50 percent, it doesn’t necessarily mean that all black fathers are the same. In fact, Alston wrote that there are a number of black fathers who are responsible parents and who have been supportive and caring for their children even in the most unstable and volatile situations. This, according to the author, is greatly illustrated in Tal-Nehsi Coates’ memoir, â€Å"A Beautiful Struggle,† in which he depicted how his black father, Paul, was a source of stability in security in a community where violence is rampant. Moreover, Alston claimed that the image of black fathers were significantly tainted by songs and shows such as â€Å"Papa Was A Rolling Stone† and â€Å"The Maury Show,† which both portrayed, in a way, that black men are bad fathers and, as a result, gave rise to the negative views towards them. On the other hand, the problem with most black fathers, according to the author, is that they think they equate being a successful parent to making a lot of money or being a breadwinner. Therefore, if black fathers aren’t able to substantially provide for their families, they opt to leave home instead of having their pride hurt. Andy Warhol – Paper

Consumerism can best be defined as the promotion of the consumers' interests and the theory that an increasing consumption of goods is economically desirable. Andy Warhol was amongst many other artists who were attacked for their open embrace of consumerism. He liked the idea that consumerism could unify Americans' of all different backgrounds but he believed that there was a lack of creativity and originality in advertising. Warhol began to use everyday objects as his subjects' and built on the movement that was later to be recognized as one ignited by him, known as Pop Art.After Warhol moved to New York, work came quickly for him and within a year of arriving, he received huge assignments as an advertising artist for a variety of high standing clients such as Columbia Records, Tiffany ; Co. , Vogue, and many others (The Andy Warhol Foundation. ) Whatever Andy illustrated from shampoo to perfume, there was a sense of decorative originality and it made his work eye catching. He would place various objects in the advertisement and they always had a slight suggestiveness to them, one that businessmen would recognize and approve (Wren 7.Andy stated that he was paid well for his commercial art and whatever was asked of him to draw or paint he would do it, if they wanted corrections he would do it, and after all those corrections, the commercial art would have attitude and style. Pop artists created images that anyone walking down the street would be able to recognize in no time and because of this there was a sense of artistic piracy because these images were not coming from the artist's imagination but as something they see and select to make their subject. They were things that ranged from comics and shower curtains to liberties and bras.They were images of all the great things that abstract expressionists tried so hard to not notice at all (Wren 13. ) Andy believed that art should not be for the select few but for the mass of America to enjoy. Ped 212 Week 4 Journal

In the year of 1963, I started school in the first grade. We did not have kindergarten in the little town I lived in. I in Plew, Mo about 12 miles from Carthage Mo, in my first grade we were on one side of the room and the second grade was on the other side. I cannot remember much, but we had a lot of recess time and played for longer periods of time. In 1964 we moved to Pierce City were I spent second grade through 6th grade in the elementary school. We spent a lot of free time out side. Our playground equipment consist of merry-go-arounds, slides, teeter totters, slides, swings, baseball fields, and monkey bars.I remember in 3rd 0r 4th grade my hands slipped and I fall flat on my face. I can remember trying to cover my nose with my shirt because it was all swollen and black and blue. Now, a lot of playground equipment back then is no longer part of todays, playground equipment. For example, the merry-go-arounds, teeter totters, and monkey bar have been removed because too many chil dren were getting hurt. We had balls of all kinds, jump ropes, hop scotch and even played hide-seek. I had three to four friend that stayed in my group to have fun with the activities we chose to play whether they were inside games or outside.However, if it was cold or raining our class had many fun activities that we could play as a group or as individuals. Our gym class was in the lunch room and after lunch was served the tables were folded up and lined against the walls. We had physical education every day. Today, some schools does not have physical education and the ones that do may have PE every other day or maybe half the time that should be allotted by state regulations. According to (Primary Headship, 2008), â€Å"teachers at primary schools, the requirements PE hours taught per week has risen from two to five† (p. ). I n the summer time my family and I loved the outdoors. We played hard as kids back then, we rode our bicycles, play baseball, worked in the garden and went to the lake on the weekends were we have swimming, boating, and water skiing. We always camped down at the water and we had to run or walk the hill to the bathroom after doing this 10 times a day, you could get all the exercise you needed in a day. Today, our young children spend too much time watching t. v. , video games, and their high dollar cell phones.When people cut out their physical activities they seem to eat more and this puts weight on our bodies, which leads to many health conditions. Junior High was just up the hill from the elementary school during my 7th and 8th years. We also had PE every day for the full hour and between different schools we had track meet set up. This was my favorite class, and I enjoyed everything that they throw at me. I was very competitive and enjoyed showing my peers and teachers how great I was. Also, my coach was also the boys coach. He was get me out of study hall to compete with the boys.This made the boys upset with the coach because even the boys could not beat me in my running abilities. The coach would say boys are you going to let a girl beat you. I know why Coach Brown did this to the boys team was to get them motivated and to stay focus. A couple of feet away was the High School buildings. This was grades 9th to 12th grade. Again I stayed the best in sports that I truly loved. When it came to basketball and volleyball and baseball we played these at our school during PE time, but we did not compete with other schools.However, a year after graduation our school started completing in these sports for the girls. As far as the boy’s teams they played football, basketball, and baseball in which, they play others school for trophies to add to the schools show case. Adoption is the Option ! Imagine you are walking down the stores at the mall when you approach a puppy store that has the cute little puppy playing in the news paper shreddings. Petting and taking pictures with it you never really come to ask yourself the question of where these dogs come from. As innocent as it may appear on the outside many of these puppies come from puppy mills in which they breed dogs in large amounts and live in horrible conditions. As an owner of two beautiful dogs I have the experience to be able to give you both sides of the story and why ultimately you should adopt. Adopting from an animal shelter has many benefits that only makes this experience even more exciting which include the costs, different breeds and what puppy mills are. Now when shopping for your furry friend whether it be for yourself or your child looking at all the different breeds it can be overwhelming and the prices only add that much more pressure. Coming form BestFriends.org it says â€Å"Buying a pet can easily cost $500 to $1,000 or more. Adoption costs range from $50 to $200, depending on whether the pet comes from the city shelter or a rescue group that has spent money on boarding, vets and grooming.†(Francis Battista). Just by adopting your animal you are nearly saving half the coast which means more money in your pocket and possible trips you can be taking with your new dog. In addition from personal experience when my sister and I adopted our Jack russell terrier Chester he came fully vaccinated and neutered ready to take home. Which means the only money you will be coming out of pocket for is just the adoption fee and you are on your way to becoming a dog parent.   Although the costs are low many may argue that they pay the price for the breed they want. Which to a certain extent I can agree and relate to the people since I myself have also purchased a purebred dog as well. Yet when doing further research it opened my eyes to see that buying a beautiful purebred dog can come with a few consequences along with a hefty price tag. It states here on Peninsula Humane society SPCA.org that â€Å"Simply put, mixed-breed dogs are, in general, healthier than their purebred cousins and typically require fewer visits to the veterinarian.†(Benefits of Mixed Breeds). So its great to not only see you are saving more costs as I stated in the last point but your dog will be there for all the amazing memories life has to bring to you. In addition when going to shelters you are seeing a wide range of different breed of dogs which can open your mind to certain breeds that you may have never expected to see. Which brings up the question of where do the se shelter dogs even come from and the trustworthiness of it. Shelter dogs often times are strays, rescue from abuse or the family of the dog simply could not take care of it. Although it may seem like these dogs are in bad health it is quite the opposite since they are now being cared for by the people at the adoption centers. As for purebred dogs one article from The Humane Society of the United States says this â€Å"Most pet stores do not disclose the true origins of their puppies, instead using deceptive sales pitches about USDA licensed orprofessional   breeders†(The Humane Society of the United States). Which often times means that you most likely will not know where your pup is coming from and that draws up a big concern of whereter they were breeded from trustworthy people or ones who run puppy mills. To fully understand retail dogs stores and people who sell purebred animals we have to look at what puppy mills are and how they affect the pups life.   The true definition of a puppy mill is a â€Å"commercial farming operation in which purebred dogs are raised in large numbers and often in substandard or poor   conditions (Merriam-Webster). For example think of farmers and how they have chickens bunched up in a coop and the more eggs the chickens lay the more space that is occupied. This can create great health concerns not only in the pups themselves but as well as the mothers of these puppies, it can also bring serious stress to their bodies. Puppy mills laws failing states in the newspaper article that â€Å"They talk of 12-year-old blind dogs held in cages and giving birth to puppies that they cannot properly care for, piles of manure on concrete floors inside sheds, cages pile on top of each other, each containing a bitch with puppies.†(Brian williams). The pups have no choice but to live in these conditions simply because the market for pure breed animals is very high. Even though the animals in the shelter may have had a bad past as well it is really good to know that we are not contributing to that market that supports these horrible puppy mills.   Therefore which makes adopting from a shelter just that more special you are able to save these animals and know there is one less animal who is hurting. Not only that but for those who have children it is a great learning experience for them and makes them feel better knowing they saved a dog. However, since we do not live in a perfect world it is pretty impossible to get everyone on board yet even just a slight percent of that could help to at least decrease the rate of stray dogs that are left out on the street As humans we are all drawn to the luxuries in life but with our animals this comes at a cost to them and their health on both sides of the spectrum.
