Ibn Battutas 1331 Journey to West Africa Essay -- Gender Roles, Mecca
Ibn Battutaââ¬â¢s 1331 journey to West Africa provides a contrast of two worlds: Battutaââ¬â¢s pre-modern Islamic culture conflicting with African societiesââ¬â¢ interpretation of Muslim beliefs and tribal traditions. He is especially critical of the various roles of women he observesââ¬âthus, allowing us insight into his own judgments formed by his culture and society. A brief summary of his life is paramount in the understanding of Battutaââ¬â¢s impressions and reactions to West African society. Abu Abdallah ibn Battuta was born in Morocco in 1304. By 1325, Battuta embarked on his first hajj, or pilgrimage to the holiest Islamic city of Mecca at age twenty-one (Hamdun, King, p. 1). Although expected to complete this religious duty at least once in his or her lifetime, Battuta accomplished the hajj, ââ¬Å"six or seven times, each time presumably accruing divine meritâ⬠(Dunn, p. xvii). Battuta was a part of the ulama, an elite class of Muslim religious and legal scholars who, ââ¬Å"traveled to make the hajj or to further their education in the religious sciences (Dunn, p. xii). Battuta traveled extensively for nearly thirty years, visiting around fifty countries, often multiple times (Dunn, p. ix). He chronicled his lengthy expeditions in the Rihla (Book of Travels), allowing some of the first and only written accounts of Sub-Saharan Afri ca in the 14th century. Battutaââ¬â¢s beliefs regarding status of women in Islamic society is perhaps first alluded to in his account of the MassÃ
«fa of à ªwà là tan. He chides, ââ¬Å"The condition of these people is strange and their manners outlandishâ⬠¦None of them derives his genealogy from his father, but on the contrary, from his maternal uncleâ⬠(Battuta, p. 37). Battuta disagrees with the MassÃ
«faââ¬â¢s tradition of matrilineal derive... ...and counted among his associates eminent scholars, royal officials, rich merchants, and Mongol Kingsâ⬠(Dunn, p. ix). It is these experiences that also allow us to also extrapolate some of the realities and experiences of the pre-modern Muslim woman. It is these same experiences during this formative period of Islamic society that established and shaped the contemporary Islamic world. Today, just as Ibn Battuta was able to observe other cultures through caravans on camelback, Muslim men and women are now exposed to various cultures in our globalized world through technology without having to travel far. And also just as Battuta, these same men and women are also experiencing the both strengthening and testing of his or her cultural and religious identity. The social constructs of Battutaââ¬â¢s era are being challenged through revolutions and uprisings throughout Islam.

Using The Heat Energy Equation - 1804 Words
INTRODUCTION (Pre-lab) What will be the amount of energy contained in specific snack foods? This question will be solved by using the heat energy equation, Q=mCÃâT. ââ¬Å"Q or qâ⬠will represent the heat in joules, this will be found algebraically by filling in the rest of the heat energy equation. ââ¬Å"mâ⬠will represent the mass in grams, this will be found by finding the mass of the water. ââ¬Å"Câ⬠will represent specific heat in Joules/grams à °Celsius, the specific heat of water will always be 4.184 J/gà °C. ââ¬Å"ÃâTâ⬠will represent the change in temperature, this will be found by subtracting the final temperature of the water by the original temperature of the water. Capital Q means that heat will be added-endothermic. Lowercase q means that heat will be lost-exothermic. The law conservation of energy says that energy will not be created nor destroyed, but will be converted from one form to another. The percent error equation will be (accepted-experimental) à · (a ccepted), accepted is the Cal/g on the snack foodââ¬â¢s package, and the experimental is the Cal/g that is calculated during the experiment. The independent variable will be the Marshmallow, CHEEZ-IT, Cheetos, and Chex-mix. The dependent variable will be the energy in either Joules/grams or Calories/gram because the amount of energy depends on the snack food. The controlled variable will be the amount of water in the calorimeter because the water will be the same amount in every trial. Importance of religion in Persepolis Free Essay Example, 1250 words
The revolution brings about sweeping changes in the society and people experience the agonizing transition from a free society to the strict code of conduct under Islamic guidelines. Satrapi, who also belonged to an elite class, experiences the changes and depicts the same through the lens of a child. Persepolis gives a sensitive account of the changing society under stringent and biased Islamic laws that were suddenly implemented when monarchy was thrown out during Islamic revolution. The threatening postures of the revolutionaries reflect how they were viewed by people at large. Satrapiââ¬â¢s graphic displays of people are unique in their understanding of peopleââ¬â¢s feelings that reflect their confusion and at the same time, their defiance against the new regime in the subtle ways. In the post monarchy time, religion had emerged as major influencing factor that defined characters and how religion actually affected their interaction with others. The high point of the book is how the people warily conformed to the changing social format under the eyes of threatening revolutionaries. The behind the door utterances as captured in graphics reveal the terror and also the defiance against the new system that restricts their freedom of expression. At the same time, it was also funny because the pictures also presented their lowered heads, a deliberate pose designed to show their meek following the dictums of the rebels. The book indeed innovatively informs the world as to how the Islamic revolution changed the precepts and concepts of social dynamic and changed modern Iran into religious country that was guided by spiritual leaders. The friendly police that had overnight turned menacing accurately revealed the changes that were difficult to accept, especially for child who was not exposed to the plight of common man. Satrapi shows the rebels as threatening creatures who lurk around the corners and create fears amongst the people. She sums up the scenario as says that ââ¬Ëour fear paralyzes usâ⬠¦ fear has always been the driving force behind all dictatorsââ¬â¢ repressionââ¬â¢ (302). The people were following the religious dictums not from choice but from the fear. The power display as seen in the streets instigates her to become ââ¬ËProphetââ¬â¢ so that she can help people. This is important aspect as her wish for power is driven from the need to do good and not follow the revolu tionaries in their acts of violence.

The Family Circuit Essay - 2712 Words
The Family Circuit A mother is doing laundry while her infant sleeps soundly in the room upstairs. She is mid-fold when a cry pierces the silence. She looks over at the baby-cam monitor and sees that her child is in his crib. She reads the dials on the side of the monitor: Vital Signs: normal. Diaper moisture level: 0. Minutes since last feeding: 136. Sighing, she reaches over and clicks three buttons, and resumes her work. Upstairs the crib starts to rock gently, as a nearby stereo plays a recording of his mothers voice singing, and a mechanical arm holding a bottle reaches in and holds the bottle for the baby to grasp. Career Management Successful Career
Question: Discuss about theCareer Managementfor Successful Career. Answer: Three Most Important Things a New Employee Needs To Know for their Career Employees need to be self-reliant while managing their career, taking charge of their own careers and not relying on others for guidance. However, they need to collaborate in some situations and strive for clarity and opportunity. In learning the most important ingredients for a successful career, an employee must know and practice certain things. The three most important things needed to know are discussed below: Investigate short term and long term skill requirements A good employee must understand the requirements of moving ahead in career. For that, they should engage in informational meetings with their colleagues and managers. The main purpose of such meetings is to gather information and knowledge regarding the different ways in which educated career decisions can be taken (Keynes, 2016). Rights Every employee must be aware of his or her basic rights. They must know that they have the freedom to refuse something if they think it would put them in serious or imminent danger. These rights cover all kinds of protection safety from machinery or electricity, or right to welfare benefits. Every employee must know that they have a right to gain safety induction training as soon as they start their work (Pulakos et al., 2015). Goals It is imperative that every employee gets acquainted with the personal and enterprise goals as soon as they join any organization. That would assist them in setting the direction of their job and their career too. They should know what to achieve to create value for their organization (Pulakos et al., 2015). School Privatization Essay Example For Students
School Privatization Essay Our society, as a whole, has been heading toward a decentralized system ofconducting its affairs. Large corporations have been getting larger , meanwhilegovernments have been giving up increasing amounts of their control. Thisdecentralization has affected even former mainstays of government control, suchas phone and power companies. As decentralization becomes more of a reality, there has been a great deal of debate over what controls the government shouldmaintain or relinquish. The public school system has long been a source offrustration. Many feel the schools would be run more efficiently and with betterresults if privately run companies were to take over. They feel that with theexisting large, encumbering bureaucracy, the government is simply unable toprovide the proper base that is necessary to support a successful school system. The proponents of privatized school systems have long maintained thatgovernments are not as knowledgeable about individual school environments asthose who and they have to manage many schools, whereas the owners of a specificprivate subsidized school would be well informed about the schoolscircumstances and can concentrate on that school alone. They say that thegovernments role should become that of regulator, not schoolmaster, and thatsince the private schools do not face the political constraints that themunicipal governments face, they would be more able to adapt to change. Since theoperation of public schools is more bureaucratic and centralized than privatesubsidized schools, it is expected to inhibit rather than promote educationalinnovation. Private schools, being less bureaucratic and more decentralized, areexpected to be more efficient organizations and to have a better perspectivethan their public school counterparts. They are also expected to provide agreater incentive and opportunity to come up with more innovative programs thanpublic schools in order to stay competitive. Bureaucracy is expected to hinderinitiative and efficiency, whereas the private sector in general is expected tobe more dynamic and responsive because of their need to stay competitive. It ishoped that this competitiveness will foster innovation. On the other side of thedebate is the group that favors continued government control over the schoolsystem. They argue that privatizing the schools would lead to a decreased focuson the needs of the children with an increased emphasis placed on the bottomline. They maintain that the companies taking over for the government wouldfocus their attention more on cutting corners to make larger profits rather thanon the education of children. With continued government control over the schoolsystem, there will remain a stability that is necessary to insure a full andequal educational opportunity for all. Having the education system privatizedwould create inequalities in the method that education would be provided. Thosewho oppose privatization agree that not only would municipal control maintainstability, but would also ensure fair and equal teatment for all. The same wouldnot hold true if the schools were placed in private hands. Schools that do notmake a profit along with teachers that are no longer needed would simply let goin order to save money or maintain profits. I can see that there are severalbenefits on both sides. The economic benefits are obviously in favor of adecentralized school structure. There be no bureaucracy to wade through to makethe simplest decisions, in the system would allow teachers to make importantground level decisions as they see fit. This increased efficiency includes manybenefits, but with what cost? What about the special needs children, or theunder privileged, will the private companies take care of them? What happenswhen these companies dont make enough money on a school, will they close itdown? The children whose schools have been closed will have to travel furtherand further just to get to school, if they even go. .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0 , .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0 .postImageUrl , .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0 , .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0:hover , .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0:visited , .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0:active { border:0!important; } .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0:active , .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0 .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u7edc2487020782406cc8604fcea288d0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The novel Victor Essay Maybe there should just bemega-schools were ten schools are combined into one, all to save the managingcompany money. With government control, there may not be efficiency but there issome stability. That is the important thing. Companies can open and close theirdoors in a day, but schools are more important than companies. Education is thekey to our futures, can we afford to gamble with what is a stake? The governmentmust become more efficient at doing its job in managing our schools, andbusiness has proven itself to be efficient. Maybe there is a way to combine thetwo and receive the best of both worlds.
